Over UAH 3.4 Million Paid for Spoiled Frozen Goods: INGO Insurance Company Covers Cargo Damage

Прес-служба

INGO Insurance Company has paid out UAH 3.4 million in compensation for a spoiled shipment of frozen chicken products that was being transported from Europe to Ukraine. The payout followed an insured event in which the cargo was damaged due to a road accident, allowing the cargo owner to recover their losses. The compensation was made under a motor carrier’s liability insurance contract, which covered risks related to cargo loss or damage.

The accident occurred during the transportation of 20 tons of frozen chicken, which were being shipped in a refrigerated truck at -18°C. In Poland, the vehicle skidded off the road and overturned. According to police reports, the driver failed to adjust for road conditions when navigating a turn.

The accident caused the refrigeration system to fail, disrupting the required temperature and damaging the cargo’s packaging. Although the carrier arranged for the cargo to be reloaded onto another vehicle, warm weather conditions led to the product thawing before the transfer could be completed.

Given the stringent safety standards for food products, INGO conducted a comprehensive investigation. Experts assessed the damaged goods, reviewed technical reports on the refrigeration system, and verified whether the transport conditions complied with food safety regulations. The inspection confirmed both a loss of temperature control and compromised packaging integrity, rendering the cargo unsuitable for further commercial use. As a result, the shipment was declared a total loss and scheduled for disposal. INGO then paid the indemnity of UAH 3.4 million to the cargo owner.

The insurance contract was concluded with the support of Aon, a leading global insurance broker. Aon helped structure the insurance solution to address the specific risks associated with international transportation and cargo handling.

According to the National Bank of Ukraine, INGO Insurance Company leads the market in property, cargo, and health insurance premiums from corporate clients. In 2024, the company saw a 24.6% increase in premiums in this segment, reaching UAH 2.4 billion, with claim payouts to corporate clients totaling UAH 1.15 billion.
