
Global solidarity in recovery: countries around the world join forces for Ukraine
Rebuilding Ukraine after the war could cost up to one trillion dollars. Last year, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed an innovative model of cooperation to international allies, which involves patronage of individual regions, cities, communities or sectors. This initiative has found a response from almost 30 countries. The analytical portal Slovo i Dilo has investigated which countries have already agreed to join the process of restoring specific cities or regions.
Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which suffered the most from the hostilities, can count on support from Poland and Italy for Donetsk region, while Greece will take the city of Mariupol, which historically had a large ethnic Greek community, under its wing to rebuild.
The Czech Republic, Sweden and Finland are offering assistance to the Luhansk region.
The United States of America and Turkey will help rebuild Kharkiv after the war. The Czech Republic will lead the reconstruction of Dnipropetrovs’k region, and Austria will lead the reconstruction of Zaporizhzhia region. France, along with Latvia, will support the rebuilding of Chernihiv region.
Zhytomyr region can count on assistance from the Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
In addition to Mariupol, Greece also plans to help rebuild Odesa.
Denmark has pledged to support the restoration of infrastructure in Mykolaiv, including residential buildings, economic, social and transport sectors. Belgium has also been asked to contribute to the recovery in the region.
The UK has expressed its readiness to take over Kyiv and the Kyiv region, with Lithuania also joining the process.
Norway could take care of Kirovohrad region, Ireland could take care of Rivne region, and Canada could take care of Sumy region. Kherson region would be restored with the support of Sweden and the Netherlands.
